My name is Landon Bost, and I’m an incoming senior at the Hussman School of Journalism and Media at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I’m from Harrisburg, N.C., and I’ve loved sports from a young age because it’s a proving ground. I always knew I wanted to work in sports; however, becoming a journalist was the last thing on my mind. I started at UNC in the fall of 2017 as a STEM major and worked alongside the UNC athletics department as a sports nutritionist intern. In the spring, I volunteered with the athletics marketing department; and I switched my major to journalism at the end of my first year. I started covering college games in The Triangle as a sophomore before I took my introductory reporting classes. All of the great writers, reporters and photographers in the area were my first teachers. They showed me what hard work is and the focus that’s required to produce meaningful, thought-provoking stories. Now, I’m at the point where the gap between my educational experiences and field experience is much smaller. Through SJI, I want to soak up as much knowledge as possible and continue meeting incredible storytellers. I was awarded an internship at The Commercial Appeal in Memphis.
